The old idea that the best way to lose weight is to simply stop eating has long been proven false, but what about the idea of eating the magic foods to lose weight? Again mostly mythical, however, there are some foods that are both nutritious and will help you lose weight.

Grapefruit has long been reported to cause weight loss, and recent studies have found that it does, in fact, help. Grapefruit contains a plant chemical that reduces insulin levels in the blood. That in turn causes your body to store less fat.

Among the other best fruits are apples and pears because their high levels of pectin fiber keep you feeling full for a longer period of time. And of course, we all know by now that the fiber in our fruits and vegetables is also what helps to keep our systems clean.

While smoothies are terrifically popular and tasty, they can be calorie-laden sugar-bombs, due to added sweeteners. Instead of stopping by the smoothie stand, try waiting until you get home (or make one to-go before you leave). For a very basic boost throw some ice, fruit, water, and protein powder in the blender. To make more of a treat, you can use milk, or better yet almond, rice or soy-milk, instead of the water. Using lots of ice creates a thicker milkshake-like texture.

While the food itself isn’t fat-burning, you can tailor your food to help you meet your weight loss goals by making more educated choices. For example, while fish is often recommended over beef, if you find yourself ordering lunch from a Subway sandwich shop, you can save yourself 10 grams of fat by ordering the roast beef sandwich rather than the tuna salad, because of the mayonnaise in the tuna.

Most chain restaurants make at least part of their nutritional data available on site or on the Internet. Arming yourself with that information can help you choose foods to lose weight, even when you’re not at home.
