How Healthy Is Grass-Fed Beef?
Grass-fed beef is donning the dining tables of more people than ever before. The nutritional value of grass-fed beef is very attractive. Low in saturated fat, people are starting to enjoy beef again, where once they were warned to stay away from it by their doctors.
Since ranchers are paid by the pound, they typically feed grains and man-made feed to their cattle. Many times these grains contain by-products from animal carcasses. Feed used to contain dead cattle, cats, and dogs but this practice has been banned since 1997. When cows eat natural grass, the beef is healthier for you.
Gran fed beef contains more saturated fat than grass-fed beef. Grain-fed cattle weigh in with 50% of their fat content being saturated. With grass , only about 10% of the fat is saturated. Grass fed beef contains extra Omega 3 fats, which have been shown to help arthritis.
Omega 3 fats may help treat or prevent arthritis, hypertension and coronary artery disease.
With grass feeding, the meat is high in beta carotene and vitamins A and E. CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) has been studied and shown to help reduce the risk of diabetes. Children with ADHD have shown improvement in attention span with increased levels of Omega3 and CLA.
