This can work by improving skin, hair and nails, increasing metabolism, boosting digestive transit, reducing fat and cholesterol in the blood stream or even just renewing aging cells so we feel good.
However, it isn’t just the healthy food we need to worry about. Getting the right balance right is crucial. A balanced diet when combined with exercise, will help us to stay fit, keep a healthy body shape and will ultimately improve our life expectancy.
Carbohydrates are our main source of energy and if not immediately they get stored as starch for later use – this is prefereable to fats and proteins which will get stored as fats if not used immediately. They make up about 10% of each cell, so naturally we need quite a lot of them in order to stay fit and healthy. Carbohydrates are measured in calories and it is recommended that an adult needs around 2500 a day. Foods grouped in the carbohydrate category include white bread and potatoes, white rice, and egg based pastas.
Protein is are used for both new musclegrowth and repair of cells and tissue in our body. They also play a vital part in creating hormones and enzymes which are vital for all bodily functions. It is advised that we consume around 55g of protein per day. Food contianing protein are meats such as chicken, beef, and pork, and also fish, and eve artificial meats such as Quorn.
Fats, although they are portrayed to be bad for us, play a vital role in the supply of energy, the making of cells and membranes and also thermal insulation and hormone creation. It is recommended not to eat any more that 70 grams of fat in a day. Unsaturated fats are much better for us and the benefits of eating healthy fats are the decrease of cholesterol levels and the reduced risk of heart disease.
Other nutrients we need for a balanced diet are things such as fibre which increases digestive transit, vitamins and minerals which are found in most fruits and vegetables and of course water, which is used for almost every chemical process in the body.
